A Compassion Challenge
“If there's one thing worth doing on your planet, it's discovering self-love. I say “discovering” instead of “learning” because learning implies you're starting from zero; but the truth is, you already love yourself. When you're born, when the amnesia happens, you forget your magnificence, and think you have to earn the right to be loved. How can you earn what already belongs to you?”
― Annie Kagan, The Afterlife of Billy Fingers: How My Bad-Boy Brother Proved to Me There's Life After Death
Self-love is a journey that we all must take at some point in our lives, hopefully sooner rather than later. It is the process of accepting ourselves for who we are, embracing our strengths and weaknesses, and treating ourselves with kindness, respect, and compassion. For many people, the journey of self-love is a long and difficult one. It requires us to confront our deepest fears, insecurities, and negative beliefs about ourselves. However, it is also one of the most transformative and rewarding journeys we can take, leading us to a greater sense of inner peace, happiness, and fulfillment. I remember when I finally accepted myself as worthy. Wow, what a revelation. I wanted it to be true but years of not believing it created doubt and insecurity. I heard the words one night in a meditation – “you are worthy.” I must have said them fifty times before I finally realized I was including myself in the “you.” Its not so easy to change a belief that has been a lifetime in the making. What I realized though is that I had to let go of all the judgments and criticisms I held about myself. We all have flaws and imperfections, but these do not define us as human beings. I had to stop focusing on the shortcomings and instead focus on the strengths and the things that make me unique. I finally remembered that I am worthy of love and respect, no matter what. And so is every one of us.
Dear Angels, I think we all come to earth with a knowingness that we are worthy of love because we are love. Somewhere along the way the experiences of life created a distortion of what love truly is and we lost sight of our worthiness. Once we reconnect through kindness, patience, and compassion we start to get a glimpse of that innocent self again.
Dear Ones, compassion is perhaps the most transformative quality you can cultivate in your lives. When you practice compassion, you recognize that you are all interconnected, and that your well-being is intimately tied to the well-being of others. As you learn to show kindness and understanding to those who are suffering, including yourselves, you begin to break down barriers of division and separation, and to connect with others on a deeper level. Compassion allows you to live with greater purpose and meaning with an inner desire to make a positive difference in the world. If it is peace you seek in your world, this is the key. Begin where you are. Start making a difference in your own circle of friends, family, neighbors. Give yourself the challenge to show an act of kindness daily. Every great movement has to start somewhere. Let it begin with you.
Dear Angels, thank you. I love you. Namaste y’all.
Today, I promise to accept this challenge!
