HOW I SEE GOD

reflections

“Our idea of God tells us more about ourselves than about Him.”   Thomas Merton

There has been a lot going on lately on social media where people are either praising or denouncing God. I wasn’t prepared for this phenomenon. I thought that after the division and hatefulness that has been so prevalent over the last months in the world and especially in the United States we would see a calming of the energy. Instead, I have seen many coming forward and sharing their arguments as to the “fact” that God does not exist. One lady in particular intrigued me with her testimony as she had spent over forty years worshipping the God of her understanding who she now denies is real. It raises the question about how we “see” God and how we define the existence or nonexistence of a Divine being. Our journey to understand God is deeply personal, yet it often reveals more about us than it does about the infinite Divine. It’s as if we hold up a mirror to the heavens and find our own reflection staring back at us. What we perceive in that reflection depends on the lens of our experiences, beliefs, and inner world. Some see God as a stern judge, keeping score of every misstep. That was my early childhood belief. Others imagine a loving parent, always guiding and forgiving. This belief brought me a little closer to my vision of God. Still, others see God as an abstract force, an essence that simply is. This was closer still yet I knew it wasn’t the entire concept. I find it fascinating that all these interpretations come from the same Divine Source. This truth highlights a profound spiritual insight: our idea of God often mirrors our relationship with ourselves. If we live in fear or guilt, we may see God as a disciplinarian. If we are full of love and forgiveness, we may envision a God of compassion. Our understanding of the Divine is shaped by our internal world, not the other way around. The more I delve deeper into myself, I come closer to an understanding of God as omnipresent. I see God in every person, animal and thing that I encounter in life.

Dear Angels, instead of defining God in human terms, what if we allowed ourselves to explore the vastness of His true essence? You have reminded us many times that God is beyond our comprehension, a boundless ocean of love and light. When we reduce Him to fit our finite understanding, we lose the mystery and wonder of who He is. When we sit in silence and simply be, we may begin to feel the presence of God—not as a concept, but as an experience. This is where transformation happens. We move from trying to define God to allowing Him to reveal Himself to us.

Dear Ones, as you grow spiritually, your idea of God often changes. What once was seen as rigid rules may evolve into a deep awareness of grace. What you once feared may become a source of comfort. Each shift in your understanding reflects your own growth, like a child who once clung to their parent’s hand but now walks confidently, knowing they are never alone. It is not that God changes; it is that you do. Your heart expands, and you begin to see glimpses of His infinite nature. The more you connect with the Divine within you, the more you recognize God’s presence everywhere—in the kindness of a stranger, the beauty of a sunrise, and the quiet whisper of your own soul. Letting go of your limited ideas about God can be unsettling. It requires humility to admit that you don’t have all the answers. Yet, in surrendering your need to define God, you find freedom. You discover that God is not confined to your expectations. He is more than you can imagine—always more and He does not need to be defended. Each one of you has to come to your own belief and truth about God’s existence. So, ask yourself: What does your idea of God say about where you are on your journey? Is it a reflection of fear, hope, or love? Let this awareness guide you, not toward judgment, but toward curiosity and growth. God is not just a reflection of you. He is the light you see by. The clearer your hearts become, the more you recognize that He is not limited by your perceptions. Instead, He invites you to grow, to love, and to step into the truth of who you are—Divine beings created in the image of infinite love. Embrace the journey. Let your evolving understanding of God lead you closer to His boundless heart, and in doing so, may you discover your own. The Holy Scriptures tell us “You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.”

Dear Angels, thank you. I love you. Namaste y’all.

Today, I promise to seek God with all my heart and mind and find the peace that passes all understanding in the arms of my Creator.
