NIRVANA

a sprawling oak in New Orleans

“Nonviolence is a powerful and just weapon, which cuts without wounding and ennobles the man who wields it. It is a sword that heals.”  Martin Luther King, Jr.

I arrived in New Orleans today, where I will be staying for the next six weeks at the invitation of Sheri and Dan, two amazing angels in my life. Our tradition, which began three years ago, is to go to an Indian restaurant called Nirvana. Our server, Sherwyn, amazed all of us at the table as he shared how he remembered the first time we came into the restaurant, even remembering the table we sat at and how we positioned ourselves with me sitting in the middle of Sheri and Dan. He remembers the food we ate and how he was the one who suggested my favorite dish, which I ordered tonight. This attention to detail is exemplary and something not seen very much in today’s time of unrest and division. It made me think of those who have walked the Earth and made an impact in a good way. Mahatma Gandhi, known as the father of Indian independence, was a steadfast advocate of nonviolence. His belief in the intrinsic value of all living beings and the power of peaceful resistance led him to pioneer the concept of Satyagraha—a form of nonviolent protest. Gandhi's journey was marked by unwavering faith and courage, even in the face of immense adversity. In a world often overshadowed by conflict and aggression, the concept of nonviolence stands as a beacon of hope, reminding us of the power of peace and compassion. This principle, championed by Mahatma Gandhi, has not only shaped historical movements but also continues to inspire individuals seeking a path of harmony. We can only hope for nonviolence to become more prevalent in our lives and in our countries across the world. I think Gandhi is still influencing our planet years after his passing.

Dear Angels, like Gandhi, we can become beacons of peace in a tumultuous world, inspiring others to walk the path of love and understanding. The legacy of Mahatma Gandhi and the benevolent presence of angels remind us that nonviolence is not merely a passive stance but an active and powerful force for change. As we journey through life, let us always remember that peace begins within us and extends outward, touching the hearts of all we encounter.

Dear Ones, when you ask for our assistance, you might find yourself inspired to respond with kindness and patience instead of anger and hostility. This is the first step toward nonviolence in your world. Chaos, confusion and division is running rampant at the moment. War is ongoing, battle lines are being drawn and choosing sides is becoming a way of life. We encourage you before engaging in potentially contentious conversations, take a moment to pause and ask for guidance. This can help you respond with empathy and understanding. The more you can incorporate kindness into your life, you are effecting change in the world. Small gestures, like helping a neighbor or volunteering, can create ripples of positive change. Like Gandhi, you can become a beacon of peace in a tumultuous world, inspiring others to walk the path of love and understanding. Nonviolence is not merely a passive stance but an active and powerful force for change. Let your actions speak loudly as you exhibit more compassion and love in the world. You can make a difference and change a planet!

Dear Angels, thank you. I love you. Namaste, y’all.

Today, I promise to see through the eyes of compassion and love in this chaotic time that we are living in.
