THE FIVE-INCH COURSE
“Golf is a game that is played on a five-inch course – the distance between your ears.” Bobby Jones
I am sure my friend Norman has heard this quote but I heard it for the first time tonight as my friends and I watched a movie that is based on a true story about a Latino golf team in Texas and their journey in dealing with discrimination and racism. The quote came about as the coach was helping the team to focus mentally on the game and nothing else that was happening in the competition. It is a very important lesson of life that we all could learn from. Whatever challenge we face, our mental attitude and perspective is what will bring us through to the other side or determine if we give up. So much of our experience is shaped not by what happens around us but by how we perceive and respond to it. That “five-inch course” inside our minds is where we wrestle with doubt, cultivate resilience, and shape the trajectory of our lives. It is there that we choose between fear and faith, despair and hope, failure and determination.
Dear Angels, like golf, life has its fair share of hazards—bunkers, water traps, and rough patches. A missed shot in golf can frustrate even the best of players. Yet, every experienced golfer knows the key is not to dwell on the missed shot but to refocus, recalibrate, and prepare for the next swing. Life offers us the same opportunity. Each day, we encounter challenges that can knock us off course—relationships that falter, unexpected losses, or self-doubt creeping in at just the wrong moment. But when we see these moments through the lens of growth, we realize they are not barriers but bridges to becoming stronger and more compassionate.
Dear Ones, every challenge in life is a practice ground for grace. How often do you measure yourselves against unrealistic standards, forgetting that every day is an opportunity to show up with love, courage, and purpose? We want to remind you that you are always supported, even when you stray off course. We encourage you to forgive yourselves and take the next step forward. Every golfer relies on a caddie for guidance, and in your spiritual journey, you have us, your angels, as your heavenly caddies. We offer wisdom, encourage you to take risks, and remind you to appreciate the beauty of the game, even on challenging days. The next time you find yourself standing at a metaphorical tee box, staring down a long and uncertain fairway, remember that the five-inch course inside your mind is where triumph begins. Anchor yourself in faith, lean on divine support, and trust that no matter how many swings it takes, you are moving closer to your soul’s purpose. Life is not about getting every shot perfect but about staying in the game with heart, hope, and humility. Play on, and let your spirit soar. Remember the words of the psalmist, “I will praise the Lord no matter what happens. I will constantly speak of his glories and grace.”
Dear Angels, thank you. I love you. Namaste y’all.
Today, I promise to remember to praise God an show gratitude for His grace.
