VOLLIE II
“Life is about creating unforgettable memories and celebrating every chance we get.” – Karen Gibbs
It is easy to say that we honor all living things. It is quite another thing to actually follow through on that. I have the utmost respect for my friend, Ruth. She lives what she speaks consistently. I want to share our afternoon with you, but first, I need to explain window wells to anyone who may not know what they are, as I did not until I spent time in Colorado. A window well is a shallow excavation in the ground around a basement window. It helps to keep rainwater and debris from entering the basement, and probably more importantly, it also provides an emergency exit route if necessary. Okay, so Ruth has a window well outside her basement window. Today, she noticed a little critter – a vole - outside in the well, looking in at her as if it was asking for help. It had fallen through the grate and could not get out on its own. It would not survive in the well with very high temperatures and no food or water source. She enlisted my help to rescue the little guy who Ruth calls Vollie the Second (yes, there was a first one years ago that she rescued), so we sat and brainstormed how to do this. We set about creating a “ladder” for the little guy to climb up and out. We will see tomorrow if this was successful, but in the meantime, we know we have done what we could to help one of God’s creatures have a chance for survival. However it works out for Vollie II, I know that both Ruth and I made a memory today that warmed both our hearts.
Dear Angels, sometimes in life we take a wrong turn or misstep and find ourselves in a treacherous place. There are times when we can climb and claw our way back up out of our mess, but there are many times when a helping hand is necessary. If you have ever been on the receiving end of that helping hand, you know the feeling of immense gratitude for the compassion that you received.
Dear Ones, when you hold life in the highest regard, no matter what form it is in, you are closest to your true spiritual being. It is easy to show compassion for a helpless creature. It is another thing to show that same kind of unconditional love and respect to those who may be exhibiting undesirable traits. When you let your judgment override your compassion and understanding of the sacredness of all life, you have stepped away from the Oneness and are living in the illusion of separation. It is not your place to judge, Dear Ones. What if the little creature had become trapped outside another person’s window who didn’t consider it a life worth saving? What if you make a wrong turn and find yourself being judged as not worthy of compassion and deserving of a second chance? Each of you has to come to terms with how you regard life on your planet, whether human, animal, or plant. We encourage you to do as the psalmist implores in the scriptures, “Search me, O God, and know my heart. Try me and know my thoughts and see if there be any wicked way within me.” Allow yourself to become teachable and you will discover that innate honor of all life that resides within you.
Dear Angels, thank you. I love you. Namaste, y’all.
Today, I promise to do my best to honor all of life.
